Somewhere between filing a story and filing my nails, I got this song stuck in my head. It started with the lyric “All my plans depend on you…” and went from there. It’s a beautiful song, sneaky in its sadness, at once devoted but not in a blissful, ignorant way. Art Garfunkel, a master lyricist even when not working with his arguably more famous counterpart, has a way of laying out feeling here that is so honest, so emotional and so raw that it doesn’t feel needy despite the hints of dependency. It just feels authentic, and brave in its admission of insecurities and desire and love.

“I bruise you
You bruise me
We both bruise too easily
Too easily to let it show
I love you and that’s all I know

All my plans
Have fallen through
All my plans depend on you
Depend on you to help them grow
I love you and that’s all I know.”
